Offshore Development Team

An offshore development team is a group of engineers in another country who build your product under your direction. ReliaBuilds provides offshore teams to startups and SMBs in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. The risks that sink offshore projects are designed out up front, with a trial project, fixed scope and quote before code, weekly demos on staging, and a repository you own from day one.
What is an offshore development team?
An offshore development team is a group of engineers based in another country who work on your product, managed by you or by a lead on their side. You get the engineering capacity without recruiting, payroll or equipment. The trade-off is distance: time zones, communication and trust have to be designed, not assumed.
ReliaBuilds runs offshore teams for clients in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. The team is sized to your stage, from one part-time engineer to a group with design and QA, and works a daily overlap window in your hours. The model is the one in dedicated development team, with the offshore risks addressed explicitly on this page.
Is offshore development risky for a startup?
It can be, and the risks are known: unclear scope, slow feedback, quality you cannot see until the end, and code you cannot take with you. Each one has a control you can ask any vendor for. If a vendor cannot show the control, the risk is yours.
| Common offshore risk | What causes it | The control we use |
|---|---|---|
| Scope drift and surprise invoices | Open-ended hours, vague requirements | Written scope and fixed quote before code; changes re-quoted in writing |
| Quality hidden until the end | Long build cycles, no visibility | Weekly demo builds on a staging environment |
| Slow feedback across time zones | No shared hours | A daily live overlap window agreed before kickoff |
| Lock-in | Vendor owns repo, accounts or components | Repo and accounts in your name; IP assignment in the contract |
| Knowledge walks out the door | Undocumented code, one-person dependency | Documentation in the repo; a lead engineer plus a named second |
| Wrong fit discovered late | Committing to a long contract first | A paid trial project before any retainer |
How do you de-risk an offshore team before committing?
Run a paid trial project first. Pick a real, bounded piece of work that takes one to four weeks, agree a fixed price, and judge the code, the communication and the demo. You are testing the working relationship, not the pitch deck.
Use this checklist when you assess any offshore vendor, including us:
- Ask for live, linkable products and what the team built on each. Ours are on the projects page, including Fox Care and Studious Prep.
- Speak to the engineer who will write the code, not only the salesperson.
- Ask for a written scope with an explicit "not in v1" list.
- Confirm the repository and cloud accounts will be in your name from day one.
- Check that a staging environment and weekly demos are part of the process, not extras.
- Agree the overlap window in writing, in your local time.
- Start with a trial project, with a fixed price and a defined end.
What should an offshore development contract include?
It should state who owns the code, what is in scope, how changes are handled, who can see your data, and how either side exits. These are the clauses to look for before you sign. This is a buyer's checklist, not legal advice; have your own lawyer review the final document.
- IP assignment. All work product is assigned to you, including by each individual engineer.
- Scope and change control. A written scope; additions are quoted before they are built.
- Confidentiality. An NDA covering your code, data and roadmap. We will sign yours.
- Account ownership. Repositories, domains, hosting and third-party services opened under your ownership.
- Acceptance. What counts as done for each milestone, tied to a demo.
- Notice and exit. Notice periods for changing or ending a retainer, and a clean handover of everything, with no fee to take your own code.
- Governing law and payment terms. Agreed in writing before work starts.
How do you communicate with an offshore team day to day?
You work in your tools on a fixed cadence: a daily written update, a live overlap window, a weekly demo and a shared backlog. Our Asia-based engineers are on UTC+5:30 to UTC+6, so the overlap is afternoons for Australia, mornings for the UK and early mornings for the US.

| Rhythm | What happens | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Written update; stand-up in the overlap window | Your Slack or Teams |
| Per change | Pull request with a staging preview | Your GitHub |
| Weekly | Demo of the working build, priorities reset | Video call in your hours |
| Monthly | Roadmap review, team shape adjusted | Call plus a written summary |
We schedule the overlap around your market before kickoff and keep demos in your working day. Replies to any inbound message come within 24 hours.
How much does an offshore development team cost?
An offshore team is quoted as a fixed monthly figure after a discovery call, or as a fixed project quote for a defined build. We do not publish a rate card. The figure depends on hours per month, seniority and whether you need design, QA or DevOps, and it moves only when the team's shape does.
Offshore teams cost less than onshore ones because of location, not because of lower seniority. For cited market benchmarks by country, read our offshore development rates guide. Questions
How do I start with an offshore team?
Send a one-paragraph brief through the contact form or by email. We reply within 24 hours with questions and a call slot. After discovery you get a written scope and a fixed quote. Most clients begin with a trial project, then move to a monthly team.
Who owns the code if I work with an offshore team?
You do. The repository is created in your GitHub organisation from the first commit, cloud accounts are opened in your name, and IP assignment is part of the standard contract. If you end the engagement, nothing needs to be transferred because nothing was ever ours.
What time zone overlap will I get?
Our team works across the UK, India and Bangladesh. We set a daily overlap window in your working day before the project starts: afternoons for Australia, mornings for the UK, early mornings for the US. Outside it, the team builds from the agreed backlog and you get a written update.
Can I scale the team up or down?
Yes, month to month. Add a designer for a redesign, add a second engineer for a launch, or drop to a maintenance retainer once things are stable. We ask for notice before a reduction so we can plan. There is no long lock-in and no fee for changing the team's shape.
Is an offshore team right for non-technical founders?
Yes, if the vendor supplies a lead engineer who writes the technical plan and explains trade-offs in plain language. That is how our engagements work. If you later hire in-house engineers or a CTO, everything they need is in the repository and documentation.
Have a project in mind?
Tell us what you're building and the hours you work. We reply within 24 hours with a team proposal, a trial project option and a fixed quote.
