Software Development for Startups

In short

ReliaBuilds is a software development company for startups in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. We work as your in-house tech team without the hiring, from idea to MVP to scale, with a fixed scope and quote before any code, weekly demos, and a repository you own. Senior engineers at offshore rates, working your hours.

What does a software development company for startups do differently?

It acts as your tech team instead of a vendor. A startup-focused software development company scopes small, ships weekly, prices in fixed quotes rather than open-ended hours, and stays on after launch because the product is never finished. A general agency is built for a statement of work and a hand-off; a startup needs someone who owns the roadmap.

That is the model ReliaBuilds runs. You get a lead engineer who writes the technical plan, a team sized to your stage, and the rhythm of an in-house team: a shared backlog, a live overlap window in your working day, weekly demos on staging. You skip the six-figure salary, the recruiting fee and the months it takes to fill a senior role. For the monthly model in detail, see dedicated development team.

Which startup stage do we fit?

The engagement shape changes by stage; the terms don't.

Stage What you have What we do Typical engagement
Idea A problem, early conversations, maybe a deck Discovery: roadmap, technical plan, fixed scope and quote; a clickable prototype to test with users 1-3 weeks, fixed price
MVP A validated idea and a budget band in mind Design and build the core flows, launch to real users, instrument analytics 6-12 weeks, fixed quote
Traction Users, feedback, a feature backlog Monthly team on the roadmap: features, integrations, performance, AI features where they pay off Monthly retainer sized to the hours you need
Scale Revenue, a growing team, enterprise or compliance asks Architecture work, security audits, hiring support, hand-over to in-house engineers if you want it Retainer or scoped projects

How does a fixed scope and fixed quote work?

You get a written scope and a single price before any code is written, and the price doesn't move unless the scope does. Discovery is where this happens: we turn the idea into a list of screens, flows and integrations, decide what's in the first release and what's cut, and quote the result.

  1. Discovery call. We ask what the product does, who pays for it, and what "launched" means to you.
  2. Scope document. Screens, user flows, integrations, admin tooling, hosting, and an explicit "not in v1" list.
  3. Technical plan. Stack choice, data model, third-party services and why each was picked.
  4. Fixed quote and timeline. Milestones with dates and a payment schedule tied to demos, not calendar weeks.
  5. Change control. New ideas go into a backlog. If one has to ship now, we re-quote that item in writing before building it.

This is why the contact form asks for a rough budget band. The band shapes the scope, and we'd rather cut features than miss a date.

What does an MVP engagement look like?

An MVP with us runs 6-12 weeks from kickoff to a product real users can log into, built in weekly increments you see every Friday. The timeline below is typical for a web MVP with 3-6 core screens on Next.js; mobile and marketplace MVPs follow the same rhythm with more build weeks.

Week What happens What you see
1 Design system, clickable prototype, repo and environments under your accounts Prototype to click through and share with users
2-3 Auth, data model, first core flow Working login and first flow on staging
4-6 Remaining core flows, payments or integrations, admin panel Weekly demo build; you start testing with friendly users
7-9 Polish, edge cases, performance, analytics, security check Release candidate on staging
10-12 Launch, monitoring, post-launch fixes Live product, documented code, hand-over or retainer starts

The MVP is quoted as a fixed figure after discovery, driven by screen count and integrations; the web development page lists what each engagement includes. Every build ships with a staging environment, documented code and the repository in your GitHub.

What have we built for startups?

Three recent products show the range: a members-only consumer club, an AI education product, and a two-sided healthcare marketplace. All three are live and were built on the fixed-scope, weekly-demo model above.

  • 5th Row: a members-only cinema club on Next.js with Stripe membership tiers, booking and city guides. Launched 2025.
  • Studious Prep: AI IELTS speaking practice with realtime speech scoring and instant band feedback. Launched 2025.
  • Fox Care: an Australian healthcare shift marketplace with AHPRA-verified workers, distance matching, award rates and automated weekly invoicing. Launched 2026.

Two of the three have AI or automation at the core of the product. If your idea depends on a language model, speech, or automating a manual workflow, our AI automation team builds that inside the same codebase. More builds are on the projects page.

How do you start small with a test project?

A landing page, a prototype, a single integration or a security review all work. If the code, the communication and the demo hold up, we move to a retainer with the same engineers. If not, you keep the code and the invoice was small.

A monthly retainer sized to the hours you need covers maintenance and priority replies, and grows with the roadmap: part-time feature work, a full-time senior engineer, or a team with design and QA. No long lock-in; the team's shape changes month to month. That's what "start small, scale fast" means in practice.

Questions

How much does it cost to build a startup MVP?

Our web MVPs take 6-12 weeks and are priced as a fixed scope and a fixed quote after a discovery call. The quote moves with screen count, integrations like payments or third-party APIs, and whether design exists. For market ranges by scope and region, read our MVP development cost guide. The number you sign is the number you pay unless you change the scope in writing.

Do I need a technical co-founder to work with you?

No. Most of our startup clients are non-technical founders. The lead engineer on your project writes the technical plan, explains the trade-offs in plain language and owns the architecture. If you later bring in a CTO or in-house engineers, everything they need is in the repository and the documentation we leave with it.

Who owns the code?

You do, from the first commit. Repositories, hosting and third-party accounts are created under your name, and IP assignment is in the standard contract. There are no proprietary frameworks or licensed components that tie you to us. If you stop working with us, nothing has to be transferred.

Will you work in my time zone?

Yes. Our team works across the UK, India and Bangladesh (UTC+0 to UTC+6), and we set a daily live overlap window in your working day before the project starts: afternoons for Australia, mornings for the UK, early mornings for the US. Weekly demos are scheduled in your hours, and you wake up to written updates and a staging build.

What happens after the MVP launches?

Most clients move to a monthly retainer with the same engineers, so the people who built the product keep improving it. Retainers are sized to the hours you need, from maintenance to a full-time team, and quoted as a fixed monthly figure. Some clients instead hire in-house and keep us as a bench; we hand over cleanly either way because the code was always yours.
